Autodesk Fusion 360 Python Changes and OpenBOM Add-in

Autodesk is making a change to Fusion360 API and scripts. You can read more about it in the following Autodesk community message – Important Python Version Change Information.

In the next MAJOR Fusion 360 update, the embedded python interpreter will be upgraded to Python 3.9.7. If you write or use any Python apps delivered as .pyc files, this change will break them! It will be broken because .pyc files are tied to the version of Python used to create them. Add-ins compiled with the current version of Python (3.7) will not be compatible with the updated Python (3.9) and will fail to load. This change does not affect any add-ins where the .py source code is available

We’ve been informed about it last week and we confirmed that OpenBOM will be providing a new version of OpenBOM for Fusion 360 add-in fully compatible with a new version of Fusion 360 infrastructure. The work has already started and we plan to submit to test and submit an updated application to Autodesk Fusion 360 App Store.

Autodesk Fusion 360 Script Load Warning

Unfortunately, from February, 8th 2022, Autodesk Fusion360 started to generate the message that OpenBOM Add-in for Fusion 360 won’t be available in the next Fusion 360 version. The message was a bit confusing and provided misleading information to our customers.

If you run OpenBOM for Autodesk Fusion 360, you might receive the following message:

If you receive such a message, please don’t worry. OpenBOM for Autodesk Fusion 360 will be available in the next Fusion 360 version and the message is just poorly phrased.

How To Update OpenBOM for the Next Fusion 360 Version

Here is what you will need to do to prepare for the next Autodesk Fusion 360 update. We are going to provide a new version of OpenBOM for Autodesk Fusion 360. This version will soon be available on the Autodesk Fusion 360 App Store. Once the new version is available, you can update OpenBOM Add-in with a new version and the problem will be solved.

Will my data or settings be disrupted?

The data you manage using OpenBOM for Autodesk Fusion 360 won’t be affected by this change and the application will continue to work as expected. All settings and configurations will not be affected.

Conclusion

Autodesk is updating Python infrastructure for Autodesk Fusion 360 and, as a result, requires updating all compiled applications that use the old Python version (3.7). It is an unfortunate event that triggered some confusing messages about the future availability of OpenBOM for Autodesk Fusion 360.

At OpenBOM, we are committed to supporting Autodesk Fusion 360 and we will provide an updated version as soon as we will check it with a new version of Python and the Autodesk App Store team will update the OpenBOM application on the app store.
