BOM is the lifeblood of any product development and manufacturing process. If you zoom in on the process of BOM management, one of the critical functions is to be able to compare different BOMs or different revisions of the same BOM. You need this function all the time. When you create a new product as a replica of another one, when you manage changes and need to compare multiple revisions, the list can go on. The BOM compare function is essential in manufacturing and product design processes as it helps identify changes and inconsistencies in product design and manufacturing processes. With the increasing complexity of modern products, it has become necessary to have a tool that can help identify changes in real-time and track changes made to product designs. This function ensures that the manufacturing process is efficient and accurate, and products are produced to the required standards. The BOM compare function not only saves time but also helps ensure that products are manufactured according to the intended specifications, ultimately improving product quality and reducing costs associated with errors or design changes.
BOM Types and Compare Function
Last year, we introduced the first BOM compare service allowing us to choose and compare any BOM or BOM revisions. Check this out – BOM Compare Service. Comparing BOMs can be a time-consuming and complicated process, especially when dealing with complex and hierarchical structures. As part of our plan to enhance and improve compare function, we are bringing a new feature – compare in “flattened BOM mode”.
What is the Flattened Mode?
The Flattened Mode is a powerful and flexible feature of OpenBOM that allows users to view BOMs in a simplified, flattened format. The Flattened Mode is particularly useful when you need to roll up quantities across multiple assembly levels. If you’re not familiar with OpenBOM flattened BOM, check this out – BOM types.
New Feature – BOM Flattened Compare
You asked we listened. The most requested feature in BOM Compare is now live. The newly introduced functionality enables users to swiftly and effortlessly compare two flattened BOMs and easily spot any disparities between them. In short, you may now Compare Flattened BOMs. We also added an easier-to-find COMPARE BOMs button on the main dashboard.
OpenBOM’s Compare BOM in Flattened Mode feature allows users to easily compare BOMs and identify differences in a matter of seconds. Here’s how it works:
- Select the two BOMs you want to compare or 2 revisions of the same BOM.
- Click on the Compare button and select the option “Flattened”
- OpenBOM will generate a side-by-side comparison of the two BOMs in flattened mode, highlighting the differences between them.
You can view a demonstration of the recently added BOM compare feature by watching the video.
Benefits of BOM Compare In Flattened BOM
Here are a few benefits of OpenBOM’s Compare BOM in Flattened Mode Feature:
- Saves time and effort: With OpenBOM’s Compare BOM in Flattened Mode feature, users can compare BOMs in a matter of seconds, saving time and effort.
- Simplify and Improves accuracy: The flattened mode makes it easier to identify differences between BOMs without the need to navigate to multiple levels, reducing the chances of errors and improving accuracy.
- Enhances collaboration: The Compare BOM in Flattened Mode feature makes it easier to collaborate with team members and suppliers, facilitating faster decision-making.
Conclusion:
OpenBOM’s Compare BOM in Flattened Mode feature is the next step in the improvement of BOM comparison moving beyond traditional comparison redline that can help to bring the immediate outcome – compare results and quickly see the difference between two structures. By simplifying the comparison process, this feature saves time and effort, improves accuracy, and enhances collaboration. If you’re looking to streamline your BOM management and collaboration, OpenBOM is definitely worth checking out.
