SaaS Integration – Onshape, OpenBOM, NetSuite

Integrations are critically important in manufacturing. After all, product development and manufacturing activities usually require multiple applications integrating together. In a traditional application space – desktop applications and enterprise applications, integrations are often complex and require significant efforts in developing services, using various APIs and data formats.

When it comes to cloud applications, integrations are usually a big concern. Therefore, when you choose online applications, it is absolutely critical to research what types of APIs are integrations are available.

The good news that well designed and open Cloud SaaS (Software as a Service) applications are all supporting REST API, which these days is becoming a standard for integrations.

Today, I want to demonstrate to you how OpenBOM Bill of Materials can be become a great data source and also play the role of the integration hub. The Bill of Materials is clearly the lifeblood of any product development and manufacturing process. To have a Bill of Materials, which represents the data about all parts of the product is critical to have production and procurement planning in place.

In my example today, we will use 3 independent SaaS services – Onshape, OpenBOM, and Oracle NetSuite. Each of these SaaS applications is provided by independent software vendors and has REST API. A unique value of OpenBOM is to serve not only as a translator but also as a hub to collect all data and arrange Bill of Materials before sending it to NetSuite.

Check the video below. The process goes in three steps.

1- OpenBOM creates a Bill of Materials for Onshape. It captures all data from Onshape but also can allow data modification and adding more components, integrating electronics and software elements.

2-  Setting and configuration of NetSuite OpenBOM application – setting data mapping and mandatory properties.

3- Sending data from OpenBOM to NetSuite including reporting and data validation.

In the new release last week, OpenBOM NetSuite application was upgraded with a new capability to transfer multi-level Bill of Materials and automatically create sub-assemblies in NetSuite.

Conclusion

OpenBOM robust API and out of the box NetSuite app (suiteapp.com/openbom) is certified by Oracle NetSuite as Build for NetSuite and it gives a robust and reliable way to pass data and control the data and business flow between Onshape and NetSuite.
